Nine weeks after the fire
The Soetanysberg fire moved through roughly a thousand hectares in January. For a month afterwards it looks like nothing: black stems, white ash, no colour.
By week six the geophytes start. They flower from bulbs that were safely underground the whole time, and some of them flower only after a fire — sometimes once in ten years.
I went back every second week. The series is not beautiful at the start, and that is the point.
